Want to combine your love for the arts with a fitness activity? Head to Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail. The 1.5 km trail is perfect for a nice walk with friends or loved ones or perhaps when you'd like to take a walk yourself. Check out unique art installations by local artists along the trail, and if you're lucky, you might see some wallabies coming out to say hello. The entrance is just off of Frenchman’s Terrace, a short walk from the SeaLink ferry terminal. The trail is soon going to add a new sculpture called ‘Wind Rider’ by Kangaroo Island artist Deborah Sleeman, as a tribute to Sarah Strong-Law, who lost her life in an accident in 2022. She pioneered women’s flat-track roller Derby in South Australia and was a big part of the local island community.
Stop by Baudin Conservation Park and find the Ironstone Hill Hike if you prefer a more natural hiking trail around Penneshaw. If you're adventurous and a bit of a history buff, drive a bit further East to Cape Willoughby Conservation Park. Here you can learn all about the first lighthouse in South Australia. Go in the morning and join their 45-minute guided tour. If you'd like to only climb to the top part of the lighthouse, arrive in the afternoon and join their 20-minute tour. Unfortunately, children under the age of 5 are not permitted to climb unless they're in an approved baby carrier for hiking.
If you'd prefer to stick to Penneshaw, walk to Hog Bay Beach and stroll along the white sandy coastline. If you're staying in Penneshaw, wake up early and watch the spectacular sunrise from the beach. The ferries will also entertain you as they roll in and out of the Penneshaw jetty. At the far end of Hog Bay Beach, you'll find the Frenchman's Rock Monument. The monument was built to celebrate French explorer Nicholas Baudin's success in finding freshwater around the area in 1802. Finally, take a visit to the Penneshaw Maritime and Folklore Museum and explore the town's rich history of early settlers. The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday or by appointment.
If you visit KI during the early weeks of autumn, you might have the opportunity to go to the Penneshaw Markets at the Penneshaw Oval. If you travel with kids, then you won't have to worry about keeping them entertained as you enjoy a glass of wine - as both False Cape Wines and Dudley Wines have playgrounds and plenty of lawn where kids can run free.
