With just five weeks to go before the yacht racing action begins, SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week (SMIRW) has launched a social calendar that promises an exciting lineup of onshore events for participants and spectators, culminating with the highly anticipated Townsville Airport Father’s Day at Picnic Bay.
Townsville Airport General Manager, Brendan Cook says they are excited to be partnering with SMIRW to offer a free, family-friendly event for locals and visitors to Magnetic Island.
“This event brings competitors and spectators from around Australia into our region, while also being a favourite with locals,” he says.
“We are excited to be bringing back the popular Townsville Airport Father’s Day at Picnic Bay, which will include The Great Inflatable Race, Sand Castle competition and beach retreat with live music, markets, food stalls and free kid’s activities.”
The inaugural Great Inflatable Race will be run by the Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club and is one of their major fundraisers for the year. Club President, Kylee de Rooy says the event will be a fun way for everyone to get involved and hopes to see plenty of costumes and fancy dress and an array of inflatables from rafts to inflatable pools.
“We’re really excited to join other Island community groups in getting involved in the Townsville Airport Father’s Day at Picnic Bay event this year.
“Funds raised from the Great Inflatable Race will help us continue to carry out our lifesaving duties and keep the Magnetic Island and Townsville community safe in the water.”
Townsville Yacht Club’s Rear Commodore – Tony Muller says they are confident for a successful event in 2022, with excellent attendance both from the yachties and the community.
“With the return of interstate travel, we have 80 crews registered for this year’s regatta, with teams coming from every state and territory, except the ACT.
“Having a vibrant on-shore social calendar enables us to attract greater visitor numbers and showcase Magnetic Island, while also supporting the local community.”
