For thousands of years, Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island has provided a safe haven for the Australian sea lion. This award-winning wildlife experience gives you a glimpse into their world.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a family looking for an educational adventure, or a photographer eager to capture the beauty of unique wildlife, a stop at Seal Bay is must when visiting Kangaroo Island.

Australian sea lions are among the rarest species in the world

With an estimated population of 800, Seal Bay is home to the third largest colony of Australian sea lions. These majestic mammals belong to the ‘eared’ seal family, distinguishable by their external ear flaps and ability to use their front and rear flippers to walk on land. In the water, their back flippers serve as rudders, steering them through the sea with agility and grace, whilst their front flippers propel them through the water.

Female sea lions spend their life in the colon where they were born. They also have an unusual breeding cycle that is not synchronised to any specific season, which occurs every 17 to 18 months — a rare trait among mammals. Their pups are born with a chocolate-brown coat that moults after about five months. Females are a silver colour and reach about 80kg in weight. Their male counterparts retain their chocolate-brown pelt and can weigh up to 300kg!

The Australian sea lion diet consists mainly of fish, squid, cray fish and cuttlefish. They are known to dive deep, with some large males diving several hundred meters deep, to catch their prey.

Australian sea lions are highly social and can often be seen engaging in playful activities with each other. They communicate with a range of vocalisations and physical gestures. Watching their interactions are fascinating so make sure you leave plenty of time at Seal Bay as it is quite hard to tear yourself away.

Conservation at the Heart of Seal Bay

Before commercial sealing, the Australian sea lion was found right along Australia’s southern coastline, but this is not the case today. Seal Bay Conservation Park is pivotal in the protection efforts for these endangered animals. The Australian sea lion has faced threats from hunting and reduced prey source, and their numbers are declining. Listed as endangered, these sea lions benefit significantly from the protection and research conducted at Seal Bay. There is even an opportunity to join a guided research tour to learn all about the latest research being conducted to help with these efforts.
