Nestled on what feels like the edge of the earth, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a testament to nature's resilience and the human spirit's dedication to conservation. This enchanting haven, located in the pristine wilderness of Kangaroo Island, Australia, is more than just a destination for nature-based tourism; it's a vibrant conservation effort that has rebounded remarkably from adversity.
A Sanctuary Born from Vision and Adversity

The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary's story began in the 1960’s when land deemed unsuitable for the soldier settler scheme was purchased by a young adventurer, Kay Gibbs. Due to the downturn in the farm sector, the property was not economically viable and in 1977 with a change in ownership, the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was born. Attributable to the serendipitous planting of Tasmanian blue gum trees, Hanson Bay became the ancestral home to now seventh-generation koalas, who are now double-disease free and flourishing under the sanctuary's care. There are very few places in Australia where you can witness such a disease-free natural thriving koala colony.
The landscape of Hanson Bay, characterised by its lack of roads, fences, and predators, provides an ideal habitat for wildlife to thrive naturally. It's here that koalas wander freely, and at night, the sanctuary transforms into a vibrant nocturnal world, revealing the active lives of many Australian animals after dark such as kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas to name but a few.
From Fire's Destruction to Regeneration

The beginning of 2020 brought unprecedented challenges to Hanson Bay, with devastating bushfires sweeping through the area, consuming buildings and animal habitats. Yet, in the face of such destruction, the sanctuary and its community embarked on a journey of recovery and rebirth. Partnering with Cleland Wildlife Park, Hanson Bay took proactive steps to ensure the survival of its double-disease free koala population and began the arduous process of rebuilding and regenerating the damaged ecosystem.
The resilience of the sanctuary's wildlife, combined with extensive restoration efforts supported by the government’s Department of Environment and organisations like 8 Billion Trees, has led to a stunning transformation. Today, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is testament to the regenerative power of nature, with a landscape reborn, once again thriving with native flora and fauna and a thriving koala population.
