The Heartbeat of Kangaroo Island: The Legacy of the KI Cup

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Kangaroo Island, the Kangaroo Island Racing Club holds a special place in the hearts of its community. The KI Cup, a hallmark event that began in 1883 on the sands of Emu Bay, is not just a race; it's a celebration of history, community, and the enduring spirit of the island.

We spoke with Greg Miller, Secretary and Treasurer of KI Racing Club to delve into the event’s history and its impact on the community.

A tradition born on the beach

Greg says the KI Cup was initially conceived in 1883 to unite the Island with an occasion that could be enjoyed by future generations. “The inaugural KI Cup saw local farmers training horses and young islanders taking the reins as jockeys and racing on Emu Bay beach”, he says. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become the island's most significant event, transcending generations, and continuing to unite the community to this day.

From Beach to Riverbank

For the last 60-70 years, the now SeaLink Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival, inclusive of the KI Cup has found its home at Cygnet River, now a recognised event in the SA Racing calendar. “This iconic event attracts competitors from all over South Australia and Victoria,” says Greg, “the uniqueness of racing on an island creates an allure as a racing destination”, he says. The KI Cup forms part of three race meets on the island; January Racing at the Cygnet, and the KI Racing Carnival including the Thursday race meet on 20 February and of course the KI Cup on Saturday 22 February 2025.

Community at its core

“This event just couldn’t happen without the dedication of our local Kangaroo Island community”, Greg says. “So many sporting clubs and service groups contribute their time, providing staffing assistance, managing set up and pack down, cleaning, manning the gates – it really is incredible”. Their volunteer efforts are rewarded with support from the club's profits, exemplifying a cycle of community upliftment.

Celebrating local heroes

The SeaLink Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival has been a launching pad for local talents like Justin Huxtable and Dwayne Dunn, who started their journeys on the island and went on to achieve national and international acclaim in the racing industry. Returning home from his Queensland-based career in 2022, Justin Huxtable claimed victory riding the winning horse 'Splash Some Cash' in the 2022 KI Cup.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

The 2020 bushfires brought unprecedented challenges to Kangaroo Island. The racing club responded by providing shelter for horses and assisting the army with equipment storage. “The 2021 KI Cup was the biggest event ever and was a way for locals and those that stood beside each other fighting the fires and in the clean up to come together as a community”, says Greg. “It symbolised the resilience and solidarity of the island's people." he adds.

In 2020, the club donated all operating profits for the year and all monies raised from auctions a combined total of $80,000 to the Mayoral Bushfire appeal. In conjunction with the VRC Melbourne Cup Tour the club was instrumental in $100,000 being donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, highlighting its commitment to community welfare during challenging times.

More that just a race: the long lunch

A more recent tradition, the Long Lunch, started 15 years ago as a corporate affair and has since evolved into a major event, attracting around 400 people each year to enjoy local food and beverages whilst getting into the spirit of the day. The Long Lunch epitomises the spirit of community and celebration that the KI Cup stands for.
