SeaLink invests in new locally built vessel strengthening North Stradbroke Island connection

SeaLink South East Queensland has signed a construction contract for a new passenger ferry that will help strengthen the vital transport connection between North Stradbroke Island and the mainland, supporting residents, businesses and visitors who rely on the service every day.

With capacity for 250 passengers, which is an increase on Yalingbila’s current capacity of just under 200 passengers, the Straddie Express will help meet growing demand on the route while enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Operating between North Stradbroke Island and the mainland, the service provides a critical connection for residents travelling to access employment, education, healthcare and essential services, while also supporting tourism and economic activity across the region. SeaLink currently transports more than 250,000 passengers annually on the route, including residents, commuters and visitors.

The vessel will be built locally in Brisbane by Commercial Marine Australia (CMA) at its Hemmant facility, in partnership with One2Three Naval Architects, reinforcing SeaLink’s commitment to investing in local capability while supporting Queensland jobs and suppliers.

Straddie Express will measure 24 metres in length and 7.5 metres in width, with twin decks providing, 141 internal seats, 27 internal standing spaces, and 82 upper deck seats.

The new vessel’s modern design will enhance both passenger comfort and accessibility, while supporting future demand on the route.

Accessibility is a key focus, with wider aisles to improve movement throughout the vessel, an increased number of priority seating areas, and dedicated spaces with fold-down seating to better accommodate wheelchair users. Minimal cabin entry and exit sills will make boarding and movement easier for passengers with mobility needs.

A larger, air-conditioned main cabin will feature panoramic windows and an onboard kiosk, creating a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience for residents, commuters and visitors alike.

Additional enhancements include open upper deck seating, improved vessel stability for a smoother journey, dedicated luggage storage, and seating with tables, all designed to provide a more comfortable and practical onboard experience.

“This service is a vital connection for North Stradbroke Island residents, businesses and visitors, linking the island community to the mainland every day. For many people, it’s more than a ferry service; it’s how they get to work, access healthcare, attend school and stay connected with family and community.

“Replacing Yalingbila with a new purpose-built vessel, Straddie Express, is an important investment in the future of this route, ensuring we can continue supporting the island community for years to come. The fact this vessel is also being constructed locally in Queensland means that investment is flowing back into local jobs, suppliers and the broader marine industry,” Mr Renwick said.

Construction is expected to commence shortly, with a build program of approximately 12 months, after which the vessel will enter into service.

Once operational, Straddie Express will help ensure SeaLink can continue delivering a safe, reliable and efficient connection between North Stradbroke Island and the mainland for years to come.
