There is no better way to finish off a day at Wadjemup / Rottnest Island than relaxing by the beach and admiring the sunset over the ocean.
Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Rottnest Island boasts several prime locations to bask in the enchanting hues of a sunset. If you’re looking for the opportunity to unwind and appreciate the unfiltered beauty of dusk on the island, here are some of the best spots to watch the sunset at Rottnest Island.
Best sunset locations on Rottnest Island
Selecting the ideal sunset location hinges on the season. During winter, beaches facing northwest offer unobstructed sunset views, while in summer, prioritise spots with southwest orientations.
1. Pinky Beach

Pinky Beach is the sunset spot on Rottnest Island. With Bathurst Lighthouse as a backdrop, you can capture some incredible photos of the dusk sky as the hues shift. Spread out a picnic blanket on the beach or take a seat at Pinky’s Rottnest Island for a sundowner cocktail.
2. The Basin
Around the corner from Pinky Beach, the Basin is another perfect spot to set up for a sunset picnic. There are BBQs and facilities where you can cook dinner and relax. When the sun goes down, climb to the top of the hill on the western edge of the bay for the best viewpoint.
3. Vlamingh Lookout
Just a short walk from the settlement, Vlamingh Lookout offers an incredible vantage point to watch the sunset on a clear night. Although the ocean is veiled by trees, the water’s reflection mirrors the changing hues, creating a mesmerising spectacle.
4. The Sunset Cruise

Nothing beats sunset onboard a boat! Join the Sunset Cruise to sip on sparkling wine and tuck into an antipasto board as the sun sinks below the horizon. Relax on deck and admire the sunset over Rottnest Island, with Bathurst Lighthouse as the backdrop. Truly unforgettable!
5. Geordie Bay
If you’re lucky enough to score the accommodation at Geordie Bay, then you don’t have to move. Set up on your balcony for front-row seats of sunset over the bay. Geordie Bay is also a popular spot for quokkas in the evening, so keep an eye out for them on the beach.
6. Thomson Bay
Of course, you don’t have to go trekking around the island to enjoy the sunset on Rottnest Island. From Thomson Bay, you’ll have a view of the mainland as the changing colours are reflected in the water. Take a seat on the beach or grab a drink at Hotel Rottnest.
Tips for enjoying the sunset at Wadjemup / Rottnest Island
Whether you just want to soak up the beauty of a sunset over the ocean or hope to capture a few cool dusk photos, here are some tips on how to enjoy the sunset at Rottnest Island.
1. Time your experience for maximum splendour

Part of the beauty of a sunset is its ephemeral nature, each one a unique spectacle that fades quickly. That means that timing is everything.
Start off by checking the sunset time for your travel day. It can easily be found in most weather apps or on the internet. The sunset time usually indicates the moment the sun disc completely disappears behind the horizon. But there is still plenty of warm magical light to appreciate in the time before and after the sunset moment. Try to arrive at your spot about 45 minutes before sunset time and allow at least another 45 minutes after.
Sunset time at Rottnest Island ranges from as late as 7:28pm during summer to as early as 5:20pm during winter. The last ferry departs before sunset, so you’ll need to stay overnight to experience sunset on the island.
2. Choose a location with a clear view to the west

Scout out a good location before the sun goes down, so you can sit down with plenty of time to relax and appreciate the full spectrum of changing colours. The sun's setting direction swings between northwest at the winter solstice and southwest at the summer solstice, so use an app to help you find the direction on your day of travel.
We also recommend sticking to sunset locations close to the settlement or your accommodation. There are few streetlights on Rottnest Island, so you’ll be making your way back in the dark. The last Rottnest Explorer bus returns to the settlement by 4:00 pm and you don’t want to get stuck on the other side of the island!
3. Consider cloud cover

While you’re in your weather app checking what time sunset is, have a look at what the weather will be like too. Besides not wanting to get caught in the rain, you’ll also want to keep an eye on the cloud cover during sunset.
Too much cloud cover over the horizon will obscure the sun and mute the vibrant palette we love to see in a sunset. No cloud cover offers bright clear skies which create the perfect conditions for a vibrant change of colours. But some cloud cover allows for the best display as after the sun disappears, bright hues of red, orange and pink can be reflected in the clouds above.
4. Bring these essential items

It might sound obvious, but once the sun goes down, it gets dark. Wadjemup / Rottnest Island has limited street lighting, so bring a torch or light up your bike lights. Even on hot summer days, the temperature by the beach drops significantly, so pack some warm layers.
Planning a romantic sunset picnic? The General Store offers a range of cheeses and dips or grab a takeaway pizza from Frankies.
Tips for getting the perfect Rottnest Island sunset photo

It’s disappointing when you have witnessed a spectacular sunset, but your photos don’t do it justice. Here are some tips for making sure your sunset photo pops rather than flops.
1. Crafting the perfect sunset shot

No matter what colours you experience during your sunset, the composition of a photo is what elevates it from a mediocre picture to a masterpiece. You can experiment with composition before sunset to get a feel of your environment. But keeping in mind a few principles of photography will help in creating a stunning photo.
Firstly, the rule of thirds. If your photo is divided into thirds horizontally and vertically, the most important elements should be placed on the dividing lines. Usually for sunset photos, that means the horizon will be placed along the bottom or top third line. Secondly, ensure your horizon is straight. But if you don’t get this right, it’s usually easy to fix later with editing tools.
2. Foreground magic

Beautiful sunset colours are awesome in real life, but they are rarely enough to make a photo amazing on its own. Look for a subject in the foreground that can add interest to your photos, such as a lighthouse or vegetation. Creating silhouettes against the colourful night sky can also bring life to your sunset photo.
Sitting back and enjoying a sunset without distractions is a luxury few of us have the time for in our day-to-day lives. Sunset on Wadjemup / Rottnest Island is a brilliant way to unwind and appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the world. If you’re staying overnight on the island, be sure to take the time to enjoy this magical island experience.
