North Stradbroke Island Surf Safety

Surf Safety on North Stradbroke Island

Straddie’s beaches are some of the best in Queensland, but ocean conditions can change quickly. A few simple steps will help you stay safe and enjoy your time in the water.

Patrolled Beaches

The safest places to swim on Straddie are between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches in Point Lookout.

  • Cylinder Beach – regularly patrolled
  • Main Beach – regularly patrolled
  • Adder Rock Beach – patrolled during school holidays

Always swim between the flags and follow the directions of lifeguards on duty.

Beach Safety Flags & Signs

Surf Life Saving uses a range of flags and signage to show conditions on the day.

  • Red and yellow flags mark the safest area to swim – always stay between them
  • A red flag means the beach is closed – do not enter the water
  • A yellow flag may be used to indicate potential hazards or caution
  • Additional signage may highlight specific risks like rips, strong currents or marine stingers

If you’re ever unsure, check the signs on the beach or speak to a lifeguard before entering the water.

Understanding the Risks

Even when the water looks calm, there can be hidden dangers.

  • Rips and strong currents can pull you away from shore
  • Shore breaks can be powerful, especially on open beaches
  • Marine life may be present in the water

If you’re caught in a rip, stay calm, float and raise your arm to signal for help.

Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club

The Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club plays a vital role in keeping visitors safe on Straddie’s beaches.

Lifeguards and volunteer surf lifesavers patrol key beaches, provide safety advice and respond to incidents. If you’re unsure about conditions, where to swim, or need assistance, speak to a lifesaver – they’re there to help.

While you’re here, you might also like to check out their Point Bar & Bistro – delicious food with one of the best views on the island.
