Wondering how to get to Fraser Island? As one of south east Queensland's most popular tourist destinations, there are many ways to arrive on the world's largest sand island.

How to get to K'gari/Fraser Island from Hervey Bay

From Hervey Bay, getting to Fraser Island by car requires guests to make their way to our mainland reception in River Heads, approximately 23km from Hervey Bay along Booral and River Heads Roads.

Our ferry service departing River Heads travels to two locations on the island, including Kingfisher Bay Resort and Wanggoolba Creek (4WD required).

For those not wanting to take their vehicle to the island, secure car parking is available on-site at the mainland reception office in River Heads. The roads within Kingfisher Bay Resort are paved, however, anything outside the boundary requires a 4WD vehicle.


How to get to K'gari/Fraser Island from Rainbow Beach

Guests getting to Fraser Island from Rainbow Beach are required to take the vehicle barge (4WD only) from Inskip Point (15 km from Rainbow Beach) across to Hook Point at the southern tip of K'gari.


How to get to K'gari/Fraser Island from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne

Guests can travel to Hervey Bay via a direct flight from Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne.

Courtesy transfers are available from the Hervey Bay Airport to our mainland reception located in River Heads. From here, guests will enjoy a short ferry ride to the island, arriving in approximately 45 minutes. Ferry departures take place multiple times throughout the day with the majority of services taking place in the morning and evening to match demand. View the full timetable here.

Once guests have arrived, visits to the island’s natural beauty, including stunning beaches, freshwater lakes, rainforests, and mesmerising sand dune systems begin. If you don’t have your a 4WD, there are plenty of activities and tours available to ensure you don’t miss out.
