4WDing on K'gari

A 4WD explores the shores of 75 Mile Beach

4WD safety information

Most of K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) can only be accessed by 4WD, so if you plan to explore the island on your own, ensure you have a suitable vehicle, relevant permits, and the right information.

Tide awareness is important if you plan on exploring 75 Mile Beach and the remote northern parts of the island. At high tide, some areas may become impassable, so it is essential to take note of the tide times during your travel days. The general rule is to make sure you are off the eastern beach for two hours on either side of the high tide. Tide times are available on the Bureau of Meteorology website.

Speed limits are 80km/h on the beach highway and either 35km/h or 20km/h on the inland tracks. All tracks on the island are gazetted roadways, meaning they are subject to Queensland laws, and drivers are required to show responsibility by treating the sand tracks in the same way they would drive on regular roads. As per Queensland law, it is mandatory to wear seatbelts on K’gari, and random speed and breath tests are enforced by the island’s resident police officers.

While K’gari is a stunning destination, it is also remote. Similar to being prepared for the weather conditions, it is recommended that you have a well-stocked first aid kit available and are ready to respond should there be an emergency.
