Day 1: Arrive on Kangaroo Island

Early morning pick up from your Adelaide hotel for a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills.  At Cape Jervis board the ferry for the 45 minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.  On arrival you will be met by your local guide and your island experience begins.   As the day unfolds, learn about the history, the flora and fauna, and the ecological and geographical features of the island.  Keep an eye out for echidnas, reptiles, wallabies and wildflowers as you make your way around.

One of the highlights of your day will be a visit to Seal Bay, where you will go out on the beach into the heart of an Australian sea lion colony, and learn about these endangered animals from your experienced guide.  Stand at a safe distance and see how these wild animals fish, surf, rest, interact with their pups and defend their territory.  A truly exceptional wildlife experience, one you will treasure forever.

Enjoy a delicious gourmet style picnic lunch with South Australian wines in our exclusive Heritage-listed bush property.  Follow lunch with a pleasant bushwalk or stroll along the beach.  The afternoon is spent discovering more of the secrets of Kangaroo Island, including bushwalking and exploring the spectacular beaches.  The beauty of small group touring is you can use as little or as much time as the group wants to explore parts of the island other tourists don’t get to see.

As the sun goes down you will be transferred to your accommodation at Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, where you will enjoy dinner before retiring to your room, in preparation for your Walking Tour tomorrow.

Day 2: Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – Cape du Couedic to Sanderson Bay (B, L, D)

This morning is an early start, and after a quick breakfast, your Guide will explain the days plan plus give you a safety briefing before you set off.  Start the day with an optional side trip to view the popular sites of historic Weirs Cove, Cape du Couedic Lighthouse and Admirals Arch.  Here you will be enchanted by the antics of the Long-nosed Fur Seals, and the occasional Australian sea lion.

Back on the Trail and heading east towards Sanderson Bay, the track enters dense coastal mallee country before breaking out to the awesome sight of the iconic Remarkable Rocks.  It is from this point where you will truly experience the rugged wilderness of the south coast of the island, as the trail hugs the coastline and offers cinematic views that inspire both awe and contemplation.

North of Sanderson Bay you will be greeted by an isolated and protected campsite where you can relax and rest amongst the wildlife and listen to the sounds of the native birds.  From here you will be collected, and transferred to Penneshaw for your ferry & coach travel back to Adelaide (KWT2CC).  Alternatively you will be transferred back to your accommodation at KI Wilderness Retreat, where you can relax and enjoy dinner (KWT3CC).

Day 2: (KWT3CC Only): Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – Sanderson Bay to Grassdale (B, L)

After breakfast you will be transferred to the campsite at Sanderson Bay to begin your day’s walk eastward to the spectacular coastal scenery of Cape Younghusband.  Today’s trail offers high energy coastal trekking at its best, with massive swells, towering cliffs and extended views along the coast.  As the trail meanders inland through to the beautiful Hanson Bay, you will notice a dramatic change in vegetation from low coastal heath to tall, dense mallee and tea tree. Upon reaching the South West River, you’ll have the opportunity to use a punt to cross the river, marking the gateway to the Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area.

You may like to take the optional side trip to the nearby Hanson Bay Beach and small settlement of Hanson Bay, before getting back on the trail to follow the winding river to Kelly Hill Conservation Park and the Historic Grassdale property.  The area was settled by the Edwards family, pioneers in the early settlement of the western end of the island.  The original cottage is now heritage listed and is a short walk from the campsite. At the end of your day’s walk, you will be transferred to Penneshaw for your ferry and coach travel back to Adelaide, having completed one of Australia’s Great Walks.

B = Continental Breakfast / L = Lunch / D = Two Course Dinner
