Indigenous Cultural Workshops

A man holds burning hay to display a cultural ceremony

North Stradbroke Island is rich with Aboriginal history and culture, which is believed to be one of the oldest living cultures today. The workshops are suitable for all ages and can be tailored to your group’s needs, covering everything from bush medicines to fire making and learning how to throw a traditional “come-back” boomerang.

Join Matthew Burns, a Quandamooka man and Traditional owner of Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island on a cultural experience. Burns has always felt a strong connection with Quandamooka Country and has a passion for sharing his stories and knowledge. In 1995 he first started sharing his culture as a part of a traditional dance troupe called Yulu Burri Ba. By 2004, he was facilitating his own cultural workshops for schools, universities, and special interest groups.

Today, Burns shares his culture with thousands of people a year on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and the surrounding Quandamooka region. He enjoys making all of his own artifacts, including knives, spears, and ropes. He also has a particular talent for being informative, respectful, and funny all at once!

There are activities suitable for all age groups, including walk tours, talk, dance and didgeridoo workshops, or the hands-on boomerang painting and throwing.

The knowledge of the Quandamooka people has been passed down through many generations, and with such a close affinity with the land and sea, they have learned to read the signs in nature and live at one with their surrounds.
