2 Day Best of Kangaroo Island

Experience Wildlife & Spectacular Scenery at a Leisurely Pace

from
$550.50pp

Take the time to explore Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's best nature-based tourism destinations and one of Australia's national landscapes.

This relaxed yet comprehensive two day tour allows you to discover Kangaroo Island's fascinating wildlife, spectacular coastal scenery, stunning landscapes and unique local produce.

The 2-day tour departs daily from Adelaide, Goolwa and Victor Harbor, Cape Jervis and from Kangaroo Island if you are already staying there. We’ll pick you up and return you to your Adelaide accommodation, or you can choose to board at the Adelaide Central Bus Station.

  • Selected Hotel pick up / set downs
  • Return transfers and ferry or flights
  • Two full days of touring in our air-conditioned coach with expert commentary from your local driver/guide
  • One night accommodation of your choice with options of penguin tours and other nocturnal walks depending on location
Day 1
An early morning pick up from your hotel for a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills. On arrival, board the SeaLink ferry for the 45 minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here you will board your luxury SeaLink coach and your local driver/guide will take you on a tour of South Australia’s premier nature-based tourism destination. Your first official stop will be Clifford’s Honey Farm to enjoy an informative talk by the beekeeper followed by tastings and an opportunity to sample homemade honey ice-cream and honey beauty products. Then travel onto Vivonne Bay Bistro located on a 260 hectare bush property, for a delicious two course lunch. After lunch visit Seal Bay Conservation Park and enjoy a guided beach walk with a National Park Ranger amongst a breeding colony of wild and rare Australian Sea-lions. Your tour will then visit another amazing wildlife attraction, the fascinating "In-Flight" Birds of Prey display, an interactive and educational display of native Australian birds and raptors. From here you will travel to Kingscote to watch the pelican feeding and learn a little about these fascinating and ancient birds, before being transferred to your choice of overnight accommodation.
Day 2
After your morning hotel pick up, your second day of touring begins at Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, an interesting bush engineered eucalyptus distillery that makes the most of its environmental resources. After testing and tasting the eucalyptus products, travel to the centre of the Island to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park where you can feed kangaroos, have your photograph taken with a koala, and enjoy a guided tour of the park. Next, travel to Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to look for Koalas nestled up in the eucalypts, and then travel to the western most part of the Island, Flinders Chase National Park, where you will enjoy a scrumptious two course lunch at Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat. After lunch and a short stop at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, travel through the park and learn about its unique trees and plants. See the rugged southern coastline, and enjoy a walk around Remarkable Rocks, providing spectacular photographic opportunities, before continuing on to Admirals Arch, where the boardwalk takes you down a rugged cliff face to reveal this spectacular arch, a natural nursery and safe haven for playful New Zealand fur seals that can be seen swimming and playing in the waves, or resting on the rocks. There is a possibility you will see more wildlife on your journey back to Penneshaw, where you will join the ferry and coach for your return transfer to Adelaide.

Service: A suggestion would be to reduce the number of drop offs at the conclusion of the tour particulary one that was a caravan park way out of the city to maybe just a few drop offs in the cbd. It just seemed a waste of time driving around the suburbs at night with the majority of people still to be dropped off in the city.

Response from SeaLink:

Thank you for your feedback on your trip to Kangaroo Island.

In relation to your comment about the air conditioning, our ferries are designed for passenger safety and comfort on the crossing to Kangaroo Island. At times the crossing may be uncomfortable due to weather conditions outside of our control. We will do everything we can to assist passengers who experience discomfort, and one proven method to help reduce the severity of seasickness is to ensure that the patient is kept cool. Our on-board seasickness advisory cards advise passengers suffering from seasickness to remove excess jackets and warm clothing as part of the strategies they can use to assist in feeling better.

We keep our passenger lounges cool as we find that this does substantially reduce discomfort on days when the weather is inclement or windy. You may also choose to sit outside in the sunshine on such days – this is a beautiful way to travel!

I apologise that you felt this was too cool, and am happy to review the level of air conditioning temperatures on fine days.

We can confirm that the SeaLink Coach transfer may have arrived late due to the number of hotel drop offs that night, there were at least 19 stops. Based on the time sheet of the driver, we estimate that the coach may have been delayed by up to 15-20 minutes. If the coach was any later than this, can you please provide further detail and will be happy to look into this.

Again, thank you for taking the time out to provide your feedback to us.

Yours faithfully

Two things worth noticing:

1) Interesting commentary by our driver on the minibus. It was a little surprising, though, to see that he kept a microphone in his hand while talking, meaning that he was using only 1 hand to actually drive (wheel, gears, etc.). I think a headset or similar would have been much more comfortable for him and much safer for everybody on the bus.

2) once back to Cape Jervis on day 2 - evening, all passengers were told to form a queue and go to the bus driver to tell him about each one's hotel. He would write down the name of the hotel and re-direct passengers either to bus 1 or 2. We had been asked to provide name of the hotel by email and well in advance when booking the tour. What is the point of providing that info in advance if then everybody has to queue again to tell the driver the hotel's name and - in our case - to try and find a map to locate it since he didn't know it? Why don't just assign the passenger to the buses as soon as they are given tickets to go on the island?

My wife and I did the 2 Day Best of Kangaroo Island tour on 23 & 24 January.

I am not an animal lover, so my views expressed here are more focused on the quality of the touring and not the animal viewing, So why did I take a tour of Kangaroo Island famous for its wildlife – I already mention my Wife.

Let me start by saying it is a false statement that you will see wildlife on Kangaroo Island – except for a large amount of road kill – the animals viewed were mostly in reserves, or worse cages. The seals at Seal Bay and Admirals Arch were in their native environment, and one could claim the Kolas at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary were also in their native habitat – but that would be a tiny stretch of the truth.

Overall there is too much time spent on the bus crisscrossing the island numerous times. I estimate about 50% of the tour occurs on the bus. While viewing the island scenery is at first interesting, there are only so many types of gum tress, sheep and farm dams to be seen before they all blend together.

Our tour started about 40 minutes late as the Sealink bus from Adelaide to the ferry was delayed by the Down Under Bike Tour that crossed our route twice. One would think Sealink would have factored that into either the route or departure times – perhaps there was no workaround.

Due this delay our first cross island bus ride whizzed past sights with hurried explanations of “We would have stopped there but the ferry was late.” But the reality was so we would not too late for our first stop: Clifford’s Honey Farm.

Day 1 –

Clifford’s Honey Farm – I have an interest in apiculture so this stop was OK with me. But bee keeping is nearly universal and to me hardly worthy of the first stop on a tour where most tourists are eager to see kangaroos and kolas. Basically, this stop is to support a local business via purchases in the ubiquitous ‘gift’ shop. This last bit is a common thread in most of the other stops – almost all include a ‘gift’ shop.

Vivonne Bay Bistro - This is where we had the included lunch. The offering was a piece of chicken and a link of beef sausage with your choice of four salads. The potato and cole slaw salads I had were tasty and people liked the chicken. I am not a chicken fan so I opted for the sausage only. The beef sausage was over cooked and quite dry – others had the same comment. It seems pork sausage is not generally available – an excuse was given of pork not being compatible with all tourists – well then why not all gluten and dairy free meals – BS excuse at its best.

Seal Bay Conservation Park – the guided walk brought you fairly close to the seals. That was OK, except for walking across the soft sand, which for an old man like me was tiring. The uphill walk back to the visitor center along a paved path was also taxing.

Birds of Prey free-flight demonstration – this was a display of essentially captive birds – as explained, the birds are free to fly away, but why would they with all meals provided. The operators stress the birds are rescue birds that are nursed back to health, and in most cases cannot be released back to the wild.

Pelican feeding – the last stop of the day was to visit John the Pelican Feeding Man. John does this feeding 365 days a year rain or shine with or without an audience. I enjoyed his mostly corny jokes and appreciated the opportunity to see the pelicans close up and flying low overhead.

Summary of Day 1 – four approximately 30 minute long animal stops and a 1 hour lunch – total time from ferry pickup to hotel drop off about 6.5 hours – so estimated 3.5 hours on the bus.

Seaside Inn overnight – excellent lodging and we happened to be there on Friday night which is $15 steak night – mis-advertised as ‘prime’ fillet – but a tasty piece of beef none the less.

Day 2 –

Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery – 9AM pickup and another long drive to the distillery. This stop has nothing to do with animals – but is more about the economic history of the island which had a large number of Eucalyptus Distilleries in the past. This was mildly interesting, but again mostly a gift shop stop to help support a local business.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park – this is THE stop most people on the tour were waiting for – close up encounters with kangaroos and kolas – in cages. I dislike the caging of animals for display purposes, i.e. zoos. All the animal lovers seem to value petting a kola more than allowing the animal to roam free in its native habitat – hypocrites in my view.

Flinders Chase National Park – 4 stops:

1. Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat – lunch here consisted of calamari and chips with a nice dessert. This was an excellent meal and I sent compliments to the chef as too often calamari can be cooked incorrectly.

Remarkable Rocks – another stop that has nothing to do with animals, just an interesting(?) rock formation on an ocean cliff.

Flinders Chase Visitor Centre – gift shop stop.

Admirals Arch – a steep descent to the beach to view New Zealand fur seals. I had learned my lesson from Seal Beach an opted for the nearby overlook and distant view of the numerous seals.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary – a short walk among Eucalyptus trees to spot-on-your-own several kolas in the tress. I think after people saw and touched kolas in cages at Wildlife Park this was anti-climactic. But maybe they enjoyed the gift shop?

Hurried dinner before ferry departure – The ferry departs at 19:30 hours, so the bus driver drops everyone off in Penneshaw to sit down for a bite to eat or grab some take away. Since the ferry & bus combination will not bring you back to your Adelaide hotel until about 22:30, it is good idea to have dinner at this time and place. My complaint is a bit more time could easily be allocated to this meal, so people were not so frantic to get to the ferry. My wife & I had fish & chips at the Fish Café, which would have been more enjoyable if eaten at a more leisurely pace.

Summary of Day 2 – six approximately 30 minute long stops – three of which had animals - and a 1 hour lunch – total time from pickup to ferry drop off about 9 hours – so estimated 4.5 hours on the bus.

Our bus driver Steve was fine – it is impossible to say if he was truly knowledgeable about the things he talked about – as I have no knowledge nor basis of comparison. He did say maybe two things that I thought were incorrect, but I could be incorrect on those items as well. My only complaint about Steve is he rattles on too long. As he was talking a question would occur to me, but by the time his spiel ended we were kilometers from the item of my query.

Caveat Emptor.

Response from SeaLink:

My name is Dean Bagley and I am the Product Development Manager with SeaLink in South Australia.

I would like to thank you for your very concise feedback regarding the 2 Day Best of Kangaroo Island tour that you and your wife experienced on the 23rd January.

Firstly, I am sorry that elements of this tour did not live up to your expectations. As a company, which values all customer feedback, we do appreciate when our guests take the time to articulate their thoughts in writing, which you have done.

It is difficult to know exactly what your expectations were before you commenced this tour and also what research you may have done prior to making the decision to book with us, but we can proudly say that we do receive many, many exemplary comments about the 2 Day Best of Kangaroo Island Tour and our coach drivers and it is just a shame that this tour obviously did not live up to your expectations.

Kangaroo Island is a very large island, as you can now appreciate and has an abundant wildlife population, however during the summer months, the wildlife on the island can tend to take shelter to avoid the heat of the day and is not as prolific as in the cooler months. We don’t like to promote the 2 day tour as a wildlife tour but as a sightseeing tour described on our website as:

“Take the time to explore Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's best nature-based tourism destinations and one of Australia's national landscapes.
This relaxed yet comprehensive two day tour allows you to discover Kangaroo Island's fascinating wildlife, spectacular coastal scenery, stunning landscapes and unique local produce”.

I do not believe it is a false statement to say that our customers will see wildlife. There are always Australian Sea-lions at Seal Bay and New Zealand fur seals at Admirals Arch. For many guests who travel on this tour, these two natural attractions are the highlight of their visit to Kangaroo Island. The Sea-lions and seals are wild animals and choose these locations to rest after days of feeding out at sea.

We do include a visit to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, which is a park full of Australian animals that have been rescued and looked after by passionate animal lovers. Apart from the birds, many of the animals roam freely in open paddocks, which provide great opportunities for our customers to see animals such as kangaroos and wallabies at any time of the year up close and personal.

With Kangaroo Island being such a big island, it is necessary to undertake long travel distances to get from one end to the other and visit the main attractions. Many guests who travel with us, who come from big cities really appreciate the vastness and contrasting countryside of the island. Many of the major iconic, natural attractions are at the western of the island and most of the island’s accommodation is at the eastern end so, on the 2-day tour unfortunately there is a bit of backtracking that needs to be done each day. Despite all of this travel, we do visit all of the main attractions that the island is known for and we rarely get any negative feedback about the distance travelled between attractions.

I am unaware that the Tour Down Under cycling race caused our coach connection service to be delayed but I will raise this concern with our Coach Operations team on the island. The first stop on the 2-day tour is Clifford’s Honey Farm (as outlined in our tour itinerary) so I can only assume that the driver was referring to stops that could have been made, if time permitted.

Clifford’s Honey Farm is a local Kangaroo Island business that produces quality honey from a pure strain of Ligurian bee, which is unique to South Australia (outside of Italy) and introduced in 1884. This stop is part of the itinerary as it showcases local produce and one of Kangaroo Island’s important industries. I’m sorry to hear that this was not to your liking as we receive many positive comments about this unique and rustic stop. We make no excuses about supporting local businesses on Kangaroo Island, many of whom would not survive without our support.

The lunch on Day 1 at Vivonne Bay Bistro is a 2-course BBQ lunch and I’m sorry to hear that this was not to your liking. We do cater for special dietary requirements, given that we are informed of this at the time of booking. I will pass on your comments to the staff at Vivonne Bay Bistro. We normally receive very positive feedback regarding the lunch, in particular about the quality and quantity of food that is served to our guests.

At Seal Bay Conservation Park, the path would have taken you to the beach, right where the colony of Sea-lions are resting and playing. This tour is conducted by a National Park Ranger to ensure that all visitors do not get too close to the Sea-lions, which may cause them stress. Seal Bay is the most popular attraction on Kangaroo Island and the walk to and from the Visitor Centre may be a little tiring for some but the experience for most people is well worth the effort.

I’m sorry to read that you didn’t enjoy the Birds of Prey Show at Raptor Domain. Once again we have not had a complaint about his attraction. In regards to your comment about the birds being captive, I refer to the owners, Leeza and Dave and what they say on their website:

“Most of the birds in our presentations here at Raptor Domain have been injured or orphaned and are not suitable for release. They are now amazing ambassadors for their species. Every day these beautiful birds enjoy showing people their hunting techniques and natural behaviours. We try to get as many rescued birds back into the wild, but unfortunately this is not always possible.”

You are correct in saying that the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery has nothing to do with animals, we don’t ever mention that it does. This is a very interesting visit as eucalyptus oil distilling was once a major industry on Kangaroo Island and many of our customers are happy to see another local business and purchase some of their products.

Remarkable Rocks is also one of the island’s most popular tourist attractions and once again we do not say that it has anything to do with animals. The rock formations provide a great photo opportunity and many people who find the history of them interesting.

The Flinders Chase Visitor Centre is more than just a gift shop. It has a café/restaurant and an interactive display where you can learn more about Kangaroo Island's diverse flora and fauna. It also has clean facilities for our customers to use before they get back on the coach. It is always important to provide ample, quality toilet stops on a tour and sometimes, with distances travelled, this can be difficult on the island.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was once farmland used for cropping and grazing. It is now a protected area, free of feral animals and home to a range of Australian animals and mammals. The local wildlife thrive in this area including a large population of koalas (in the wild). I’m sorry to read that you thought this was anti-climactic.

On the final day, after the tour concludes at Penneshaw, we do allow time for our customers to grab a bite to eat before they board the 7.30pm ferry. The time allocated for this is normally 1 hour but sometimes, this may be less depending on what time the tour finishes. We do have a great café in the Penneshaw ferry terminal, which I hope the driver would have mentioned to you however we do like to support the local businesses in the town and the fish & chips are always good.

Finally, I’m glad to hear that you thought the driver was fine. Our drivers are trained to provide thorough commentary on our tours and I’m sorry to hear that you thought he ‘rattled on’. I will also forward this feedback to our Coach Operations Manager.

I trust that I have welcomed your comments in the spirit with which they were shared and I wish to thank you again for providing us with this feedback and your contact details.

Kind regards

I would highly recommend go on a two day tour instead of seeing the island in one day. There is just too much to see to appreciate it for just one day.

Service: The coach ride to Port Jervis was calm and informative, the ferry ride was a bit rocky (but that can't be helped) and the staff were all nice and happy to help

Product: We had a small group and every single moment was perfect. Fro the scenery, to the drive and people we were with. Greg the driver was very personal and informative. It was like we were all friends including Greg who knew each other before the tour and the tour felt like a scenic ride with friends. We joked, laughed, got to know each other and Greg went the extra mile and took us to attractions that weren't on the schedule and it was absolutely perfect in every aspect. I could not ask for a better driver and fellow passengers. I have been on tours before but this made me want to move to K.I. just from the tour and sense of community. Service: I booked the tour quite late and I requested for flight from KI to Adelaide, which flight appeared to be sold out. However, SeaLink went out of their way to check whether the flight could fit in another passenger. SeaLink quickly sent a follow-up email to inform me that the airline was able to arrange for another passenger on the flight. It was a last minute decision to go to KI, and I was very pleased that SeaLink was absolutely responsive to fulfill my requests in that short time frame.

Product: Guide was always punctual and very knowledgeable. Pace of tour was lovely and relaxed, allowing ample time for roaming and photo-taking.

Service: Really pleased with transport, itinerary, lunches and in particular our excellent driver/ guide, Larry. The accommodation at Kingcote Motel was OK but not great. Perfectly adequate, clean and friendly with a lovely seafront to enjoy a bracing walk. I would probably recommend people of my age group to upgrade to a better ( and more expensive ) hotel.

Product: An excellent insight into this fascinating island made even more memorable by our informative, personal guide, Larry. I have recommended this tour to other people.

Service: We enjoyed our tour and would recommend it to our friends in the U.S.A. Two days was just enough to get a taste of the island.

Product: Our tour had a good mix of natural beauty and native animals. Les, our guide, was knowledgeable and it was good to have a "local" show us around. The low point was our ferry trip back when we hit a storm, but we managed the best we could under the difficult circumstances. The boat crew was very helpful.
